What song takes you totally away?

Music Reviews Add comments

Have you ever heard a song that takes you to another place?  One, where after you’re…

…done listening to it, you blink your eyes, quickly shake your head, and have to come back into the present moment?

One song that has always done it to me is Alice in ChainsDown in a Hole.

Like my favorite song of all time, Estranged — I can really relate to it.

Alice in Chains always had a knack for riffs and rhythms that would “suck me in”, but “Down in a Hole” is one of their best.

I’ve also always enjoyed Alice in Chains songs these as well:

  • Rotten Apple
  • Nutshell
  • Don’t Follow
  • How about you? What song, or songs, take you away?

I really like Alice in Chains too. They had something really unique and special.

I think Willie Nelson is one of my favorite take me away artists. He’s so good at being one with the people, writing and singing some of the greatest songs ever. A few favorites are “Me and Paul” and “I Can Get Off On You” with Waylon Jennings.

I also really enjoy Megadeth and Outkast as getaway music. Both are interesting and intelligent writing, which to me makes it worth listening.

I think there are several songs that do that to me. For instance, Van Halen’s “Dreams” takes me way back to high school and, perhaps oddly, makes me think of my days as a violinist–I was at a competition and failed to get a 1st place medal and was so upset, that was the only song that could cheer me up. Or LeAnn Rimes’ “I Need You” which takes me back to the days when I first met Don. The list for me goes on and on. :)

Father and Daughter by Paul Simon
This songs was clearly sent from the great beyond from my daddy when I needed to hear it most. Whenever I listen to it my mind is transformed into a time machine where I relive all of the most precious moments I spent with my dad through the years. That songs is the closest thing in this world to getting a big bear hug from him and I am reminded that he is with me always.

The “Jurassic Park End Theme” by John Williams. No matter what has happened or what is going on it allows me to completely relax and orient myself and my thoughts, as well as refresh the positive outlook of: nothing is impossible, only improbable; and probability can always be overcome by sheer determination and will.

      - The Running Free – Coheed and Cambria
      - Living On a Prayer – Bon Jovi
      - China Grove – The Doobie Brothers

I would have to say (after much deliberation) Canned Heat by Jamiroquai is my take me away to another place track, no matter how many times I hear it, it always makes my day a little better. A very close second and third would be Turandot: Nessun Dorma by Puccini and Big Sky by John O’Callaghan feat. Audrey Gallagher (The Armin Van Buuren remix –> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjwHNGsKdg&feature=related).

One of the MANY all time favorite songs of mine is “Every Breath You Take” by The Police. Till this day, I cannot hear that song w/out hearing my mom saying, “We did aerobics to this song!”
Another song I’d like to mention is “Welcome To The Jungle” by Guns and Roses. It use to be my morning wake up call from my loving big brother.
